this is nothing to do with leeds pubs but you guys seem to know so much about the area I wonder if you can help? I am trying to trace a family who lived in Barleycorn Street Leeds 11 in 1947, 60 years ago. I can't find any trace of Barleycorn Street now - I'm guessing it was demolished? Can anone confirm that and if so tell me what is there in its place. Was that in Wortley. The family was called Longthorn, Elsie and Thomas - lived at no 16. I don't suppose anyone remembers them?Suze

Anyhoo ... heres a Leodis pic of Barleycorn Street - the 'x' I've added is hovering above No.16(house with white steps). The picture was taken on 8/03/1965. I suspect that, like many photos on Leodis it was taken shortly before demolition - Leeds City Council often seemed to do this. It would appear that numbers 2-10 had already been demolished - there's an empty space where they would, presumably, have been.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Heres a photo taken on the same day - showing the other side of Barleycorn Street - The 'Crown Chemical Works' which apparently supplied 'Bakers sundries', The works and shops face onto Wortley Lane

I think not!!! they dont get past you that easy do they drapesy Indeed! And here's why Barleycorn Street was called Barleycorn Street - the Barleycorn Hotel at 101 Whitehall Road serving Dutton's Kirkstall brewed ales. Again taken 08/03/1965. this is the other end of Barleycorn Street - which runs down the left hand side of the pub - and so runs between Whitehall Road and Wortley Lane. Note the Chimney of the Chemical works in the background (i.e smaller chimney, to the right of pic). The street to the right of the pub was called St.John's place. The pub is a typical 'end of terrace' pub - of which there were once hundreds in Leeds - but few now survive.I daresay your relatives had a pint or two in here Suze!

And here's the site today thanks to Google Earth.(double click on image for a better view!)The large grey building is a retail unit called 'Dunelm Mill' that sells linens/soft furnishings etc.. it was previously 'Readmans' and has recently been refurbished. As to the area it was in - its borderline between Holbeck and New Wortley. As it comes under 'Leeds 11' rather than 'Leeds 12' I think I'd place it in Holbeck , just. It was very close to Holbeck station. Sadly , I don't know the Longthorns....
