I remember it still in operation in the early 90's. Surely there must be pix somewhere.

the train was definitely running about 5 years ago. I remember being v jealous that I was a bit too big to ride it. From the mansion take the path that walks round the lake clockwise, the engine shed was just at the bottom of the slope. I haven't been back for ages though. The train used to go in to the woods, circle round near the far gate and back.

I wonder what happened to change that?

There were some traces of the old line and shed as you say (between the lake and edge of the golf course.)I can't remember it running in the last six years or so, though - my son is nearly 9 and has always loved trains!
