From the ones I've seen folks, and below some, they tend to be rather mundane (and fairly permanent) markers of a utility presence.

Are they letters or numbers ie 78 when looked at while on the pavement? It would look like this <78> this could indicate the length in feet or yards of that particular street/road, could even be 'chain' lengths as highways use that measure a lot.Carving out a letter 'B' or '8' with rounded edges would be very difficult, hence being squared off. It's just a thought as the marking does appear to give reference to either end for that distance.

No, I don't think they're numbers - I ve seen this on kerbstones(note U.K. spelling) myself and often wondered what they were - but you never see any other "numbers" which you surely would if that's what they were.
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Where services conduits pass under kerb lines, their locations shall be marked by casting a letter 10Omm high, imprinted 3mm into the concrete surface, on the upper surface of kerb sections. The letter "E" shall beadopted to mark the location of electricity supply conduits and the letters "G" and "T" for gas pipes andtelecommunications respectively.Don't know what the 'B' is though?

Couldn't be anything as simple as 'Below'? I doubt it, still racking my brains for a suggestion though. You're probably right re the utilities etc. What is the 'L' for then?

We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.

There's a fiar collection on Harehills Lane, between Roundhay Road & Drakes Cycles, including one marked either '<EOLELE>' or '<EDLELE>'and a stone marked <'MH 19?3>' there's something where the question mark is, but that end of the stone has chipped off & been concreted over, byt the bus stop outside farmfoods on Roundhay Road
