1986 SECRET BRITAINABOUT THE BOOKThe village that the Doomsday Book forgot....witchcraft on the hill the Devil built....a pub with two fossiled cats, and another that stages international Conker Championships.....a floodlit cavern filled with 70 military vehicles....and caves where ghosts and hobgoblins lurk....This is the Secret Britain introducing the unexpected, the unexplored and sometimes the unexplained, from southernmost Cornwall to the north of Scotland. The book is profusely illustrated throughout with over 250 specially commissioned colour photographs.LEEDS AND AROUND page 229In the city where a mill masquerades as an Egyptian temple, in the country where the real Robin Hood may have lived, and in between an ancient church has a sanctuary handle nearly a thousand years old.The book also looks at the arcades and mechanical clocks, key stones on the older buildings, sheep grazing on Marshalls Mill. The Leeds Zoological and Botanical Gardens and the Bear Pit, Abbey House Museum, Otley Memorial to the Bramhope Tunnel disaster and St John the Baptist Chuch at Adel. Also the fact that Robin Hood more than likely came from Yorkshire that Nottingham. So there we have it Secret Britain links nicely into Secret Leeds………..who would have thought it 21 years ago?
