A spending session in ray Allans, Cecil Gee(its a mobile phone shop now), Vallances, thence to the Kardomah(I think it's now the halifax)- not a bad saturday morning. Yes there was a Valances on the Headrow and a Valances on Vicar Lane opposite the Corn Exchange. To be exact the road opposite the Corn Exchange is 'New Market Street' 'not Vicar Lane' but I know where you mean! Just thinking, I wonder how many people wandering around town on Saturday would know the name of the street they were in if asked? Probably not me! I'd be OK with the major streets, but once you start getting into the likes of Upper Basinghall Street I'm lost (name wise). The Valances shop on The Headrow is now JJB Sports I think

New Briggate is easy - thats from the former Odeon out past the Grand Theatre, isn't it?

Think you'll find that New Briggate IS Upper Briggate.i.e running upwards from Old Lewis's, past Wren's, till you get to the Vicar Lane junction and Inner Ring Road

Lower from the Town Hall end to Briggate , becoming Lower as far as Vicar Lane and what was, looking at old Godfrey (I said Godfrey - Not Arry, arry!) Nelson Street which must now be Eastgate.

PASS!I think Upper Head Row and Lower Head Row became defunct (can I say that?) earlier in the 20th century, the whole streetbecame just 'The Headrow' from Park Lane end and VictoriaSquare (in front of the Town Hall) through to Vicar Lane and then became Eastgate, past the Arthur Louis Aaron roundabout and left in front of the QH Flats to Regent St. The other side ofthe roundabout on the right,is St Peter's St.I think the bit of the Headrow between the Town Hall and theCenotaph is Victoria Gardens now. (Wish they wouldn't change things about so much!

Fallas Coaches were opposite Elland Road Football Ground weren't they? There was also Midgley's Coaches on Meadow Lane.In Morley there was a coach firm called Hargreaves - they were coal merchants, did removals, and ran a fleet of blue and cream coaches. This diminished to a travel agency in Townend which has now closed. In the fifties and sixties they were agents for Heaps Tours, who were based in Bramley. Helen and I's first holiday together was with Heaps, in 1966, by air (BKS) from Leeds/Bradford to Jersey. £28!! Full board, including two half day excusions around the island. And no we didn't stay in some grotty hotel. It was a beautiful place - looked like something out of the Caribbean!
