As a child, I, too, was told by my family that Frankie Vaughan (Ableson) was related to the 'family' firm. I was later surprised to find out that he was born and brought up in Liverpool albeit he later attended Leeds College of Art. I always thought that he was born and bred in Leeds because of the timber connections and what I had been told. I now wonder whether or not there was any true connection other than having the same surname.Ian. I knew he was from Liverpoolhe even played a scouser in a feature film the title of which escapes me.

If my memory serves me right, Scheerers was on North Street in the 60s before moving to the Merrion Centre where I believe it still is. My dad got a drum kit from Kitchens in 1966, and I still have it. Scheerers has been in two separate locations in the Merrion Centre. It used to be at the front, where the big furniture shop is now; it moved to a bigger shop around the back of the centre in the late 80s or early 90s.

I always thought Frankie Vaughan had some connection with Ablesons - although I knew he was from Liverpool. I occasionally met a member of the Ableson family in the 1960s and '70s . He always said that Frankie Vaughan was a first-cousin .

If my memory serves me well (I might put that in a song on day) kitchens the music shop was on either King Edward or Queen Victoria street.I remember standing in the booths listening to the record you going to buy before parting with your 6/3d(circa 1962)

I heard Frankie Vaughan interviewed on radio once and he mentioned that his real name was Ableson. He chose his stage name Vaughan because his grandma called him her number one but she had such a strong eastern European accent it always came out as "number vonne".
