Hi Everyone,This is my first post, after having spent many hours shouting 'I remember that'! reading through this site! Anyway, my fascination is with garages and showrooms. Can anyone remember a garage on the cross roads near the airport, where the Fountain chippy is now? I think it had a lift on the forecourt. And also was there a bus service depot (red buses) just down the road in a housing estate? I think they built a load of new (brick) bungalows which are surrounded by a high wall on the area in the mid 80's... I've lived in Yeadon for 21 years (since I was a kid) but can't remember, any photos would be great!Cheers All

Hi zscort,Here is a picture of what I think was a filling station at the junction of Bayton Lane and Victoria Avenue, Yeadon, I do not know if it is the one you were referring to:http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 0_164696So far as relates to the other thread on this subject by scottishmagic, here is another photograph which shows an aerial view of the junction:http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 590151With regard to the site of where the current travellodge (or similar) is located, the picture shows the site as a field around 1948-50. I can remember working at some premises on the site in 1962 to 1964 when I was an audit clerk. The company was called Webster Brothers of Horsforth and they did landscape gardening. I think that they later moved to Otley and occupied premises on the Ashfield estate on Weston Lane. The site at Yeadon was later occupied by a firm called Caraland who sold and serviced caravans, I know that they were there in the early 80's but I don't know when they vacated the premises or when the travellodge was built. The petrol pumps are on the forecourt of what was a newsagents shop, Parish & Son. In early 1980's I knew a girl that lived there and she was called Mc Donald. The Fountain fish shop is a little bit further down the road towards Bradford and is not on Bayton Lane or the road junction.I hope that this helps.IanPS: Perhaps one of the moderators could move the other thread on this topic, by scottishmagic, into this one.

According to Godfrey's 1908 map, there was a commemerative fountain at this junction, hence the name of the chippie. I don't know when it disappeared. The Caraland field is shown as a quarry on the map. The Travelodge was built about 5 or 6 years ago and was first called Yeadon Stoops. The two large stone houses opposite are currently being renovated. I remember The Peacock pub. It later became Image before making way for Peacock Close - housing. Maybe it should be in the Leeds Lost Pubs thread?

Cheers guys, that's the place! Picture is excellent! Just how I remember it...I forgot about Caraland been on the junction, I remember now being dragged around there as a kid by my dad! He also took me around AFG Nissan (that place didn't last long) which was over the road, now Murgatroyds, to look at a load of new damaged cars that had fallen off a transporter....they weren't as cheap as he expected!Thats made my day!P.S Does anyone know what the garage on the A65 in Rawdon was called? I believe it sold Lancia's. It was a typical 30's style, white painted showroom, on the left when approching Rawdon lights from Horsforth. It was knocked down to build offices, you can still see the original end wall. Thanks Again

ackers72 wrote: Wasnt that garage near Rawdon Crossroads also called Garnetts of Guiseley too, if its the one your thinking of, it sold Lotuses and other sporty motors too I think??? That's what I thought it was, 'cos my mate has an 80's SEAT which had a Garnetts dealer sticker, the sticker also mentions Lancia and Lotus. Don't know why it was called Garnetts of Guiseley, I don't remember them having another branch in Guiseley.

Re. the white garage on the A65 approaching Rawdon lights.this was I think originally Lawson' garage with the main entrance on Micklefield Road. Subseqently operated by Garnetts , until Garnetts moved to new premises.Re. The Fountain Chippie. this has only being named the Fountain for a few years, when the present owner bought it. Previosly known as Moorlands Fish Restuarant for many years, situated at 152 Harrogate Road, next to 154 which is on the corner of the crossroads. For many years the crossroads was known as Fountain Cross Roadsrelating to the fountain situated adjacent to Murgatroyds Mill. The fountain was erected to commerate Queen Victoria's Jubilee and was in use until it was hit by an army vehicle during the war. Sadly this was not replaced.Hope this helps

Ken Webster is my father who died in 2002.I remember some of the guys there but don't know what happened to them. i did meet Billy Kirness about 20 years ago, he was the sign writer and model maker. Ken stayed in various businesses until he retired to portugal in about 1990. He came back because of ill health and died in Skipton.I found this link because i was looking for stories of Ken and those days but I was also trying to find the Air force squadren he was with in the war.Any info? richard_webster@hotmail.com
