Very nice with a good thick layer of dripping and a sprinkling of salt (and never mind the health police)As for the pikelets / crumpets debate, in Leeds we have pikelets. These must be eaten straight from the grill (no toasters in our house!) and blathered in proper butter.

I wondered about that. ~We always called them pikelets (I saw it spelled piclets in Nottingham once) never crumpets. Is there a difference? Are crumpets thick and pikelets thin like Scotch Pancakes with no sugar in?

You used to be able to get them in the markets. there was a stall that siold only irish stuffthey had potato cakes, potato farls, potato scones-they all tasted the same to me.They did belting soda bread.some interesting stalls have sprung up on the market in the past couple of years. It's a shame the irish stall has disappeared thoigh. My ex "other half", coming from Northern Ireland has a passion for soda bread [dry and tasteless],potato farles [flat & soggy] and barn brachs [dry, lumpy with gritty bits] and any of the many, many realtions who came for a freebie weekend in London were begged to bring these delicacies with them. To quote that famous "Oirish" phrase, "ole dirt, so it is".
