Sammy Ledgard's blue bus bus route number 34 used to run from Leeds to Otley via Bramhope. The Ledgards number 33 route used to run from Leeds up Otley Road to West Park roundabout then Spen Road, Spen Lane, Butcher Hill, Horsforth to Greengates. This route used to confuse people as the LCT 33 bus route also ran up Otley Road to Cookridge.

I stand corrected - the blue buses with the white stripe were indeed South Yorks. ( not East Yorks). Maybe I was getting confused with the Ridings.
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Nobody seems to have mentioned Yorkshire Traction, T Burrows & Son and J Bullock & Sons all of which operated into Leeds from the south of the West Riding. I am also sure that I remember seeing "United" buses in Leeds from the north, very similar in all ways to West Yorkshire buses. Finally did not Sheffield JOC , Yorkshire Traction and possibly West Riding share a Leeds/Barnsley/Sheffield service at one time?

I can't really remember "Bullock and Son" - B&S their garage in Wakey was behind the old (new in my youth) bus station - probably where the new one stands now - but they were taken over by the West Riding in the early fifties. I know that West Riding ran quite a lot of services out of Eastgate - to Selby, to Hemsworth via Wakey and to Sheffield and Barnsley probably as part of a joint service. I think United ran into Vicar Lane from Ripon. West Riding no 10 bus from Crigglestone via Wakefield to Leeds had it's own mini bus station opposite the open market. The buses were AEC Regent, had central entrances, two sets of stairs and were normally red as opposed to the normal West Riding green. I believe they were replacements for West Riding trams that used to run into Leeds.

The Yorkshire Woollen buses used to run from Sovereign Street to Dewsbury, Elland, Bruntcliffe and Netherton/Overton.When I was courting (there's a word you don't see any more) Helen, she used to come to Leeds on the 116/16 (depending on whether it was a West Riding or Yorkshire Woollen) Netherton bus from Ossett. The buses to Huddersfield ran from Wellington Street or Aire Street. I suppose the Halifax buses went from there too. There was a Hebble service that ran to Halifax and Rochdale I think. When I worked at Newboulds in Bradford I used to catch it up Sticker Lane occasionally.

East Yorkshire from Hull? Their double deck buses had dome shaped tops to pass through an arch at Beverley. The East Yorkshires were low bridge double deckers, with the aisle at the side upstairs and a bank of 4 seats with reduce headroom over the seats. I used to get them from Leeds to Doncaster, via Castleford and Pontefract , 2 or 3 times a year. Thought the blue livery was great. bluddy 'ell! i remember them! I,ve been looking for a pic of a S yorks lowbridge double decker on the internet. No luck so far.Only found 2 buses in S Yorks liveryOne from the 90shttp://christopher-leach-photography.blogspot.com/2007/03/south-yorkshire-of-pontefract.htmlA single deckerwww.skylineaviation.co.uk/buses/gwt630.jpgInteresting that the company was based in Pontefract. Also the livery changed at some point from cream with blue stripes to blue with white stripes.

Another couple of oldies for you.Ribble Motor Services ran into Leeds Vicar Lane Bus Station on the X88 service from Leeds - Morecambe. The drivers used to stay overnight in Leeds before leaving for the return at 09.00 the following morning.Another contender would be the short lived company Miramare who ran a service from Morley to Leeds via Wide Lane.Yet another snippet was Farsley Omnibus was locally known as the Farsley Flyer. And yet another snippet. One of the most respected past operators Samuel Ledgard never purchased a second hand bus during his lifetime. His last purchases before his death were Leyland double deck buses and he refused to pay Leyland to paint them as he could do it cheaper at Leeds. Second hand buses only appeared in the Ledgard fleet following his death.

It used to be the collecting point for their coaches etc. We went to Italy with Gain Travel of Bradford a few years ago and that's where we were collected from - that's how I know.
