You used to be able to buy "donkey" stones at the grocers. We had the remains of a demolished sandstone street behind our house so we used to use ordinary lumps of sandstone. My mum would swill the flags, then scrub the front step and donkey stone it.

Don't know exactly what they were. Just a block of compressed stone dust, water and a binder. The powdered stone gave old worn polished stone steps a non-slip effect. The biggest firm that made them had a picture of a Donkey as a trademark, and it was pressed into the surface of the stone blocks

Up until recently, the Carbolic Soap Company [http://www.carbolicsoap.com] sold Donkey Stone. They also sold that staple of every school lav, Izal toilet paper [in both cut sheet and rolls].
