Pics on Leodis of this pub are disappointing - but this one shows part of it and shows a row of cottages that were once adjacent.

Most interesting shot of all perhaps - an old sign at the back of the pub - only on the small (original I assume) part of the building to the left hand side of the front. It shows that the pub was originally just " The Fleece" and also that it had a full license - so was not just a 'beer house'.

The "Golden" was apparently added as a result of charitable work undertaken by the regulars or so I seem to recall reading somewhere.

We used to go in here every lunch time, I used to work over the road at The Y.E.S. (Yorkshire Engineer Supplies), in the late '70's.

They, (Y.E.S.) used to rent Armley Baths one night a week to run a swimming club. I used to go there as a schoolboy in the early '60s, they weren't too particular who got admission! We used to get chips from the chip shop on the corner of Armley Moor on the way back to Bramley. If I am correct chips were two old pence, and fish fourpence.None of us could afford a fish.

It was indeed just 'THE FLEECE'I was born and lived on Tong Road, Armley and in 1964 worked as a lad at a clothing factory called, ELLIS (Leeds) Ltd, which was just behind the pub. A few of the workers there would call in at lunchtime, especially the sewing machine mechanic, Jack, who usually had more than a couple of pints!!Happy days.
