[quotenick="chameleon"]liits, you mentioned Woods chippie and Coes, (flat thin fish, greasy dark batter!), do you remember Drakes opposite the Station in Crossgates?Having fallen out of the "Tap 'oil" in the station a few times, I remember it!I can only ever remember using it once or twice and can't recall what the F&C were like. The last time I had fish and chips in Leeds was about two years ago and I got them from the chippie on York Rd, opposite the end of Crossgates Lane. It was Saturday Lunchtime and they were queuing out of the door at Coe's so I went elsewhere. I went in here because I reconed that there would be nobody in. There wasn't. Problem was, they were in the process of making up a shipping order, like Coe's used to do for Barnbow. Needless to say, I had to wait about twent minutes. But they were worth it!

G'day S L gourmetsWhen I was a kid living on Farnley Ring Road we used the local chippy owned by the Picks. They decided to go modern and start using oil instead of dripping and trim the fish to a standard shape and size. This was foreign to our taste buds. My old man went troppo and made me jump on my trusty J T Rodgers and bike it to get the family tea from a small chippy opposite the Gamecock pub.------real f & cs.Even younger I used to go to the cubs in Lower Wortley and after the meet we'd go to Penny's chippy, corner of Branch rd and Cow Close rd to get two penneth of scraps covered in salt and vinegar. One winters evening a cub chucked a snowball into the white hot fat. It went off like a bloody hand grenade and the St Pauls 27th wolf cub pack was banned forever more to enter Pennys chippy.I dont know if these chippies still exist, it's been forty years since I was in Leeds. This is a great site but I cant get any work done after reading all the threads. The humour has me in stitches particularly from blokes like Sir Harold Hawk.CheersAndy

Does anyone have a definitive definition as to the difference between a bread-cake and a tea-cake? Cat-amongst-the-pigeons, anyone? about 15p depending on the bakery lol

There is one chippie not to far away from there, over the ring road. As you go up the hill on Lower Wortley Rd and turn left into Granny Lane there is a real small chippie on the left. Not been in for a year or so, but last time I did they were fantastic.Oh, and sir Harold of Hawk is not what you would think either. He has a script writer and sits in the public library most days drinking white lightening.

I know it's still there, but I'd like to nominate Harry Ramsden's as a lost chippie. What the hell happened there?!!!

Also as to Bryans, it's the self proclaimed food snobs that are only keeping this place as a decent chippie. Chippie it is, but it is far from decent imho.. It used to be a cracking chippie years ago. Like Harry Ramsdens int's believeing it's own press and is too far up it's own jacksie and has allowed the food standard to drop, imho of course.

Exactly. In their headlong rush for the dollar, they've chucked out everything that people went in there for...decent grub, decent staff in Edwardian uniforms, flock wallpaper, chandeliers, the atmosphere, the lot. All you get now is a McFilet-o-fish without the bun! (PS Can someone tell McDonalds that it's filetttttttt with a T, not fillay. It's an English word, not French. And those potato things are CHIPS!) Bloody marketing.....again!

Goo'on wi'yer, Simon! For one thing,I hate cider. (Long story!)and by the time I can drag me poor old pins all the way up Outgangand Hough Lane,I'm only fit to withdraw a book and toddle back down 'oam!(downhill all the way! Minestew(!), if they had some Leeds Bitter or Riggwelters on tap in<h> libr'y I might be suitably refreshedenough for some scriptwriting! Anyroadup, till such a time,I'll dome level(horizontal?)best to Sluffen'everybody off wi' me Goonishramblings.I still like Bryan's, skin on or off! They do a real good pensioner'sSpecial 3 course meal and pot o'tea for just under £7! They have awonderful 'Harbourside' scene,(tiled wall )down one side of therestaurant. Real atmosphere.I reckon!Another good Fish restaurant in Headingley,is Brett's,Oppositethe Library on North Lane. Bit Spartan inside but the visitingRugby teams all seem to favour it.Arry

'Drakes' have a shop in Knaresborough,it's a big 'eat-in' or 'take-away'place,and they're pretty good F&Cs.Si,do you ever use the Maypole fisheries in Otley?? They're superb. There was a fishery at the bottom of Horsforth town street.Same side as the Old Kings Arms, bit further up.
