There are chippies in Yorkshire that sell Hollands Pies and Puddings, there's one in Huddersfield - I could take you there, but don't know it's address.There used to be a pea and pie shop in Batley that sold Hollands stuff - but it's long gone. That's something I haven't seen for ages - a dedicated "pea and pie 'oil"

Presumably they were reps samples but somehow I seem to recall getting one as a Christmas present !It's possible somebody thought the dinky little bottles would entertain us kids.YR thin is also still made by Chivers in the Irish Republic, it's actually a very good Worcester Sauce type product.I can't remember what the third bottle was either. It could have been tomato sauce. Can't have been anything more memorable.We didn't *really* know what you did with the Y.R. thin..

Like a lot of Yorkshire (northern) words - they have equivalents in Lowland Scots. The word "thoil" as in I can't thoil t'brass" - I don't think it's worth it - has an equivalent in the Scots word "thole" The English would say that Lowland Scots (lalands) is just another form of English - those that speak it claim that although like English it's based on Anglo Saxon/Norse it is in fact a similar language that grew separately. The Ulster Scots also speak a form of lalands called ullans.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before,but the term "while" being used instead of 'til/until is a Leeds peculiarity.eg a shops opening hours 9 while 5.30.I only came across this as being peculiar to Leeds when i read a weekly column by Rod McPhee in the YEP,so i asked our lass who is a scouser,and despite the fact that she has never mentioned it before she told me that it "dus er ed in" (Shes now fully Leeds in her dialect ,NO scouse at all!!) When she came to Leeds in 87 she did not know what the chuff anyone was on about,oh yeah dont worry its open while late!!Ive never thought of it before but replacing while instead of until makes no sense at all.Loiners Loiner Loiners Loiners Loiners!!!!

That's something I haven't seen for ages - a dedicated "pea and pie 'oil" My next door neighbour from Thornhill (Dewsbury) speaks longingly of pie shops where you used to get your hot pies "Pea Wet". IE. a hot pie dribbled with the liquor from mushy peas.Sooner him than me. One of Peter Kay's stock in laughs was "Pea Wet" ..."half-chip, half gravy, pea-wet, top, bottom smak."Half a tray of chips, gravy and mushy-pea juice squeezed between two spam fritters.Blindin'*********************Quelle Finesse.

Thanks for the information on 2Yorkshire Relish". I didn't know about Chivers version.it was the thick stuff I loved though. I originally came across the Goodall & Backhouse version when living in Blackpool in the 1970's. I followed the move to Hammonds.In fact I wrote to them after they stopped doing it and received a reply that they were concentrating on Chop sauce but would re-introduce YR. They never did of course.If I ever see the thin version I might get it, but I prefer thicker stuff.i ualso use a lot of 2Mushroom ketchup" in stews etc that I currently get from a shop in Hebden Bridge when visiting there.
