He did an almost national tour about the WWI memorials and how prolific they are, but are now being forgotten about as older people die off and the younger ones either don't know or care what they are even there for.I think there is a list somewhere detailing all the memorials that were put up written because of this programme. - Needle in a haystack though contacting the BBC i would have thought... The Yorkshire Indexers are trying to record Yorkshire memorials on their site. Leodisman-Were the people you are looking for living in Burley at the time?Is there not a possibility that they or their family had moved, albeit temporarily? Also you need to take into account non conformist church/chapels because there is also the possibility that these persons may have dabbled in non conformist denominations.Ive found that when researching such things you should try to be as open minded as possible as to where to look. Hi CNOSNII did see the TV program with Ian Hislop, very interesting. I think the WW1 memorials are too many to count, the ones under the care of the Leeds Council are well maintained and for the moment their future is safe. The memorials that are in private hands are the ones that are very vulnerable. Every church had a memorial to the congregation and every factory of any size had one for their employees, a lot of these memorials have disappeard over the years as buildings are knocked down for development. I would like to know if the 'surplus' memorials are stored anywhere or just destroyed.Going back to my original question about the Burley Village memorial, I think I will write to the YEP and ask the question. There must be lots of people out there who lived in the area.Thank you very much CNOSNI for all your help and suggestions.Leodisman.The 2 WW1 casualties that I am trying to trace:-I have got this information from the CWGC site on the internet. HARRY?HENRY FLETCHER age 18, son of Mark & Jane Fletcher, 29 Bankfield Terrace, Burley, Leeds.ARTHUR EDWARD MALLABY age 31, son of Herbert & Mary Mallaby, 8 Poplar Street, Burley, Leeds. ARTHUR could have been married and possibly moved out of the area.Leodisman.
