http://www.pbase.com/danielrobot/image/ ... inalHaving a good old nosey on this excellent picture and i noticed for the first time that you can clearly see the original white cloth hall built 1711 on Kirkgate. Now dont hold your breath, but i am going to try and upload a drawing of how it looked when built,Chuffing hell, what am i doing wrong!!any way this link has the same drawinghttp://www.leeds.gov.uk/discover/discovery.asp ... 438Picture in top right hand, drawn as if looking from Kirkgate looking in the direction of the present Corn ExNow go to the photo and look at Kirkgate, find the corner where the Scotsman was and then follow down that side of thr street towards the Parish Church, you can see a white van,the building in question is at an 8 oclock position to the van.You can clearly see the [ shape of the building, though the gap between the two wings in the drawing has been filled in with another building, thus converting the original open courtyard that faced onto Kirkgate into an enclosed courtyard. You can still see the two seperate wings and their respective triangular shaped roofs,at either side of the later building that closed the courtyard off to Kirkgate.Apparently they are talking of demolishing it because it is so unsafe, though it is a listed building and is of huge importance to Leeds History.    This was the state of affairs two years agohttp://www.leedscivictrust.org.uk/news0507whitecloth.htmI would love to get in that courtyard and try to see what,if anything, can be seen.Phil_d i think a mission for the LHES should be commisioned.

'Apparently they are talking of demolishing it because it is so unsafe, though it is a listed building and is of huge importance to Leeds History.' This was the state of affairs two years agohttp://www.leedscivictrust.org.uk/news0507whitecloth.htmThis is exactly what I was saying about listed buildings in the Corn Exchange thread - no ammount of 'protection' will preserve a structure unless money is forthcoming, with this as the predictable outcome - we see it time and time again. It seems so ironic that to preserve, maintain refurbish or develop a listed building, that strict conditions must be met to satisfy English Heritage, yet there seems to be nothing to require an owner to ensure the safe keeping of a building if they choose not to do this. A rather short-sighted philosophy I think.(Phill - unless I was mistaken when passing, you should have a look for uncovered old signs here...).

I came accross this article from May this year - a ray of hope of sorts, for the Cloth Hall. Still a shame it could not have been earlier when more the original than a replica may have been possible.http://www.leedsliveitloveit.com/Busine ... fault.aspx

Hello all - This is my first post on this forum as I have only discovered it to day (06.12.07) and just browsing briefly has cost me about three hours of time LOL.I was born and bred in Huddersfield but moved to Leeds in 1986 and have been here ever since so I am still learning about the City and its surrounding districts, I have lived in Armley and Farnley at various times and over the last twenty or so years have watched the rapid re-development of the City - and of course its massive expansion as well.My first post is in this thread because as a child we used to travel to Leeds on a regular basis and Quarry hill was always a facinating building that held my captivation, partly because of its sheer size but also because of its fame due to Queenys Castle on the Telly too.I also have many memorys of being trailed round the Market on shopping trips, but if truth be know it was a fascinating place to be, with the old style stall holders calling people in and the banter and general good feeling there always seemed to be in there - couple that with all the smells from the various area's like the fish market, the butchers isle, the spice shops etc etc and it was a brilliant place.Fantastic site this, and I can see myself wasting a lot more hours in here over the winter months.

Off topic, I know, but I wonder if anybody can throw any light on this.....The Ladies waiting room and gents toilet were part of the 1938 built bus station [it was re-built in 1963 at a cost of £66k, but that was only the bus lanes]. I was lead to believe that these buildings had been built in the style of Frank Pick of London Underground fame when Leeds Corporation were trying for Government money to build a sub surface tramway to double as air raid shelters. When the government money was not forthcoming, the shells of the buldings were turned into loo's. Any ideas?

Not sure on all this but i remember having to go around a curving shiny brown tiled wall in the gents to be able to have a wazz, and then being met with that "Smell"
