The line had a connection to Beeston Colliery which was down Westland Road, and the line had that connection to middleton Colliery railway with New Pit being the pit just by the link.So It took a lot of colliery trains. If you search hard enough you will find a lot of colliery railways, there being several lines out Pontefract lane at One time. Gipton colliery had a line to Hovingham avenue, osmondthorpe colliery had an incline up to York Road which is now traceable as a ginnel through the estate.Wortley Colliery had a tramway to it, and there are a couple of lines to collieries in farnley and whitehall road.Traces of Leeds coal mines can be found most of the south of the river, and certainly out to the east of Leeds.Godfreys Maps are simply superb for this. Old shafts often are still marked by a break in the modern housing where they didn't build on them!!

Surely before Town Street leaves Belle Isle road.Given all that I just accept the boundaries are somewhere in a grey area in the middle of Miggy woods. The old road from Beeston to Miggy ran througn cross flatts park and up what is now Middleton Grove (it being the old road to Middleton)As you walk that route which you can do today, on your right is Beeston which runs up Dewsbury Road to Tommy Wass and on your left is Hunslet which desdcends down Dewsbury road and down to Hunslet carrThe beeston miggy boundary turns right at south leeds stadium and runs through the woods the wood being "miggy wood" on the miggy side and Park wood on the Beeston side.Hunslet RLFC were in Hunslet Carr at "Hunslet Park Side" of the boundary and the old Beeston colliery in westland road at "Beeston Park Side"The word Park is usually referring historically to wooded hunting grounds - like Royal Park and park square. This "Park" straddled Hunslet Beeston and Miggy in the very old days.Where the Hunslet beeston boundary dog legs right at SLS I assume it also veers left to forn the Hunslet Miggy Boundary and will run across the dip the miggy railway runs in. Middleton Colliery therefore being in Miggy (at the Park halt of the railway).Belle isle was never a big enough place to share any boundary and was merely a hamlet of miners cottages in Miggy. What is Belle Isle estate was originally in Rothwell township in 1700.

Green Godess wrote: Hi Folks,Can someone please tell me or describe the electric tramway that ran through Belle Isle, close to Middleton Lodge.? It ran from town I think along Hunslet moor before turning right at the miggy railway coal staithes. It followed the railways side until just after Parkside it started to turn right (going under the bridge that carries the railway that starts this thread) and climbed through Miggy Woods to the water tower. It therefore ran through Hunslet and Middleton and not Belle isle strictly speaking! It was originally Middleton Light Railway built for sending building materials to build the Middleton estate - I think - then it became a tramway for residents to get to and from Leeds. Two trams spent years in the scrapyard at parkside I took a picture as a kid. There are a lot of wonderful pictures of this tramline taken by enthusiasts before it's closure.

Right, I have come to reopen this debate!Apologies for the poor quality of the pics as they were tkane by phone. Nut hopefully these will show just why I am so confused about this!(Dunno how to resize these, never posted a pic on here before! Sorry!!)Top of the round structure can just be seen here to the right of the house chimney. Not sure what the house is for but it's all boarded up...
