One of the problems with Leodis is the question of copyright. They have two references on the website to the Wellington Inn http://tinyurl.com/zod8pfu but not any photos

I provided them with the photo below but they didn't want to know because I didn't know who owned the copyright

"....... however, there is no breach of an unknown author's copyright in a photograph if it has not been possible to identify that person, and it is reasonable to assume that either the copyright has expired or the author died more than 50 years before any 'infringing' act took place (such as reproducing or merchandising such a work)."
Judging by the marks on the photograph it looks as though it was done to illustrate individual properties for the purposes of compulsory purchase in which case the commissioners of the photograph would have been LCC Highways Department or its predecessors, the LCC Planning Dept. or its predecessors etc, etc. What they should be asking is "How did we lose control of our photograph?"

I didn't suggest we donate photographs which have unknown copyright.
My suggestion is that we find out if we can assist the library with the photographs that they already have.
I will try find out on Monday, when I visit Leeds.
Re copyright
If they know the owner of copyright the library will sell you a copy of the photograph, If they do not, they will not.

But the more recent photos are 'donated' by the people who took them and they haven't used them. There is enough of us keen people who enjoy the history of Leeds to add a hell of a lot of onfo I think. Leodis is a great idea as so is the ability to add comments. It all goes toward the knowledge.
Come on Leeds United!

They are active as I got s recent response on the location of the horsforth charabanc as being more likely to be Scarborough.

Unfortunately it's not just a matter of uploading photos. In their world they need to be catalogued, captioned and any queries managed. Even if we could do it someone would need to police it, moderators etc.

I like the idea of volunteers doing the legwork.

That's surprising because the photo is obviously over 50 years old. In a similar situation Leodis accepted photos from me which were obviously Edwardian and the copyright was unknown. They also accepted my own photos taken in the 1960s.
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Apart from volunteer staff, these days, plenty of young people are prepared to do unpaid internships just to get the work experience and contacts. I have some misgivings about internships but if it helps some youngsters into jobs they want why not?

I would cite my own experience of volunteering - I was one of many, many thousands, who volunteer with the Zooniverse project which did & does the plodding leg-work on a "flood of data" and, when it started, cataloged, collated etc in just under six months what would have taken the small team of researchers over a decade to wade through.
