Mistress Lane is a fascinating name. Just to add further to the information in the 1888 map provided by buffaloskinnner I have taken these 2 sections from OS maps in the excellent National Library of Scotland website. The first is an 1888 to 1890 map that to the top left corner does not label Mistress Lane but it could be the unnamed lane that joins Ley Lane. The second is an 1906 map that labels Mistress Lane which joins Ley Lane.

One of the things my wife bought me for my Birthday on Sunday was a book on Leeds. among the photo's was one of "Minor and Scurrs Yard Leeds 1" off. Briggate. could someone tell me where it was please.

The electricity has just dimmed a lot!!! Presumably a reduction in electricity supply

The 1853 Street Index for Leeds states that Minor and Scurrs 'Road' was situated at 57 Briggate.

Sorry if this has been covered already but does anyone know the origin of ‘Mabgate’? Wikipedia says that ‘mab’ is an old word for prostitute and in an article in YEP it stated that it’s short for ‘Mable-gate’ with ‘mable’ also an old word for prostitute although the dictionaries say that ‘mable’ is slang for a classy or high status woman. Can anyone shed any more light on this?
