The redevelopment of Wellington Street and Whitehall Road.

Post by Leodian »

There is ongoing major redevelopment of the area between Wellington Street and Whitehall Road, a short way from City Square. I already find it hard to recall what parts looked like before the work started with, in my case, only the long vacant space at what used to be part of Central Station being all that I can really recall. The whole area (including the river and canal area) has changed beyond my recognition.

This photo (which I took on September 3 2015) shows the structure of a building (possibly called Central Square) on Whitehall Road near to the rear of the Wellesley Hotel. I like its Meccano-like framework :).

The one you have snapped there is on the site of what was to be Lumiere, planned to be the tallest building in Leeds. That fell off its twig in the financial crisis of 2007.

Previously it was part of the Royal Mail sorting office, a pretty depressing concrete building. I remember it because of numerous dashes down to catch the late night post box facility in the wall.
