In the 60's I often used to see a small mobile crane called the "Iron Fairy".
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

That's Brilliant, I used to see it often around Hunslet in the 60's but had completely forgotten it.

In the 1950s on the bus going to work on a morning I used to see a man walking under the dark arches towards City Square with long straggly grey hair, tee shirt, shorts and white surgical boots.I was told he washed dishes in the Queens Hotel. very strange character.

There's a second hand one for sale in the Auto Trader for £5,500. weighs 6 ton. but guess you would have no trouble getting to work on a morning, not sure about parking it.

Excuse me if this has been mentioned in any earlier post but you never see young lads running around the streets in Wellies, with the tops turned over - summer or winter.
Daft I call it - What's for tea Ma?

I remember getting told off for turning down my wellies as my mother said the water would seep up the lining and my feet would get wet
life is not a dress rehearsal

Hi j.c.d.
I remember seeing one for the first time parked on Whingate. I often saw it beetling around the Armley, Bramley, Wortley area in the mid 60's. The name is so funny & unsuitable for the vehicle that it stuck with me for over 50 years.

The Iron Fairy 10 ton crane was first introduced in 1956, and are still available to buy and hire

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Making a "bogey" out of an old pram occupied a lot of time and resources. I recall that mom wasn't pleased by the wear on my shoe heals, resulting from propelling my bogey backwards. Another useful item we made use of were the orange boxes. Separating the plywood from the metal corners wasn't easy with our limited access to tools. Do kids even know what "Conkers" are? A pal and I cut school at least once in order to take a bus out to Boston Spa just to collect Conkers. Don't ask me why we thought we had to travel that far for Chestnuts. :?: How about the bowl (SIC) and hoop? There was a friendly blacksmith willing to make the repairs when necessary.
