Someone's been in here.. You can't get all the way through (I forget the reason) One of the shafts is still open & i believe the B.R.B use it for track maintenance for the live bore still.

It would be near impossible to get down to the track from by the portal due to a newish palisade fence and a steep bank, best means of approach is from the bridge further down. Last month??? There's a lot of summer looking blooms in that pic.But fair play to you mate, you got a lot nearer that I dare...

Looks like a jungle round and about. There's a picture in a book I have from the steam days taken from the bank above the tunnel mouths back in the days when they gave a toss about how the trackside areas looked. Also got one of a pacer coming out of the 1901 tunnel from presumably the late 80's or early 90's. There also looks to be quite a few open airshafts going on the google earth overhead shot and also some closed ones on the tunnel which is in use, which is odd.As an aside and on the subject of airshafts Phill the one you were asking about for Gildersome tunnel if you haven't found it looks to be about half way between the one in Dean woods and the one in the industrial estate, if you look between the two on google earth there's a promising looking circular disc in a field.
