Leo I don't think that's an aside it's back on topic. The fact it puts me in mind of "trigger's broom" OF&H is an aside. ;)

That was Modern Floorcovering Co, where I worked and the Drake was the Broughams Arms (a real dump then)
Its not changed much then. The "tap room", the smaller of the two, is usually full of "nutters" and the concert room is not much better whenever I visit. It's one redeeming feature is it is one of a very few pubs in Leeds that has almost always had at least half a dozen hand pumps on whenever I have visited in the last 30 or so years(although it was closed for about a year) and one of those hand pulleds is always Theakstons OP. Come to think of it that might be why most of the clientele appear to be nutters if they have imbibed a couple or more of Theakston's "loopy juice" ;)
Never ever entered that place if ill repute (Mucky Duck) always was a Whip or Viaduct man myself[/quote

Only went in the Viaduct in the 60s on a lunchtime as my brother worked for Jim Windsor and the bookmakers clerks used to gather in there for a swift 'un before leaving for their various offices (Les Peverill was the Landlord)
Loved the back room in the Whip , Steve the Barman bringing down trays of mild beer non stop, Wet Mondays when all the building lads were rained off was a great lunchtime. Landlord then was Ken Buck who finally moved out and took the Regent off Harrogate Road.
Happy (Hic.) Days.

The Broughams Arms (Duck and Drake) being situated at the bottom of Kirkgate did not ever have much chance as it was an area no one ever went near as there was a large Doss house opposite full of unfortunates who drifted in to the Pub on occasions plus there was music on a lunchtime and a fair amount of "Ladies" frequented the place. sometimes we had to discourage them from conducting their business in our warhouse doorway (broad day light) and also we had a few offers occasionally "Tickle your ******s for a quid lad".

When I got married in 1960 we bought a terrace house in Beeston and I got the carpets from where I worked but my Pal had just become the manager of a tile company and was keen to show off his fitting prowess, so for a few pints he laid cork tiles in the hall, floor tiles in the living room and then the bathroom walls and floor , my drum was like a tile showroom. in those days everything seemed to revolve around "A few pints" I got a joiner who got me a new front door complete with lock, only problem after drinking his freebies he fitted the door on upside down so there was no room for the letter box only on the side of the door. it stayed like that for many years after I had left. We got a slimline telly from Valllance and Davidsons with spindly legs that kept falling over for seven bob a week.we had a coal fire in the living room and an electric fire in the front room but as the coal fire kept the room so cosy we hardly ever used the other room on which we had spent so much money on. I had many adventures in that house in the Burlingtons.
