HUNSLET NOSTALGIA

I wonder if anyone has any connection with a Hunslet lad who joined the RAF (National Service) on the same day as me, October 20th 1954. He was a real character and cheered us all up no end in those first eight hard weeks of "Squarebashing" at Hednesford in Staffordshire. His name was Jack Swan(n) and he lived in the prefabs - I'm almost sure the number was 62 Low Road, Hunslet. Well, I was a sheltered lad from Ilkley and knew nothing at all about Leeds south of the River so it was always fascinating to hear about the lives of our new mates from all over the Country. We've lived nearly our whole different lives since then and it would be grand just to have a long natter about 1954 etc.

Hi hicklingmick Sorry to say the Hunslet you knew is no more the area between Jack Lane and Hunslet Road was one of the busiest parts of Leeds when it comes to industry.Known all over the world for its quality products what the hell happened to let this die.

my dad born in 1899 in hunslet worked for fowlers, and Rolls-Royce and as you said where did it all go?he then moved to x flats st beeston and worked for forgrove engineering in Dewsbury rd. one of my early driving jobs was for saville
bros wholesale grocers in church st,next to the red house pub,(far too handy) and the pre- fabs were opposite in those days.the whole area of hunslet was a big employer with some good pubs and workers cafes.

Hi snowman 1 Its no wonder there are no jobs for school leavers the powers that be have let our industry go to the wall.People say that its cheaper to buy from abroad thats because we did not invest in new technology and carried on with old machines until it was too late to compete with other country's.

Think I"ll stop in this little rural area of Norfolk,our village doesn"t even have a shop. quote.


Don't mention about having no shop out loud on Harehills lane or you will have 20 or so Asian shopkeepers escorting you back to Bernard Mathews country.. enjoy your stay, Regards.

Hi hicklingmick I dont know if you remember Hunslet Road in the fiftys there were shops on both sides from the bottom of Leek Street to the Swan Junction I remember going shopping with my mum you could buy just about anything there.A memory i have carried with me for has long as i can remember is shopping there around Christmas its dark there is snow on the ground and all the shops have there lights on. I can close my eyes and see it to this day It might not seem much in this materiel world but in my day things like this meant more than they seem to do today.
