This chap and his A35 van used to be there every night 'til all hours . This was the mid-late 1960s... Whatever happened to him , Who was he ? Does anybody know ?
I was in a "pop group ", working pubs and clubs and we would always drop in for Hot pork pies, mushy peas and industrial strength mint sauce, after a gig. We often met similar groups and mayhem occurred .
Then we would go on to lower Merrion St , Knock "Micheal " up at the "Blue Lagoon Turkish Cafe . He always had Moussaka in the oven and we'd wash it down with "Black Tower", "Blue Nun""or even Mateus Rose", ( if we had a girl to impress ). " 2 hours kip .and then up for work or college.
Any info or memories would be welcomed .

Often called in for a feast of pie and peas after a skinfull. . My mate lived in Garforth, myself in Burley so it was a good stop over no matter which end of town we were drinking at. Mr Man was of the "Rainbow persuasion" if I remember correctly . Late 60s early 70s was the time I called in.

Quite a lot of people down here in Rugeley (West Midlands) have never heard of pie and peas and some even turned their noses up at putting a pork pie in t'oven. Is it a Northern thing?
Sit thissen dahn an' tell us abaht it.

It's odd, but I've been met with blank looks on several occasions here on Tyneside if I've mentioned pie and peas. Odd because a quick google reveals that venues in the area advertise pie and peas suppers etc., although I suspect it wouldn't be pork pie and might involve that abomination pease pudding.Chrism wrote:Quite a lot of people down here in Rugeley (West Midlands) have never heard of pie and peas and some even turned their noses up at putting a pork pie in t'oven. I think in the North East they are more in to Peas Pudding whtch seems to be a mass of mushy peas in a lump.
I have pals in the West Midlands who rave about Faggots and peas (Paes) whilst when I lived in Bristol faggots were very popular bu without peas.
Up to about 1960 there was a pea and pie shop on Town St.Beeston . Mr. Carlisle sold only that dish. lovely after a few pints of Tetleys.

we moved from beeston to x gates in 1967,every sat night coming home from stock car racing we always stopped at mr-man-sir for pie and peas or a hamburger slice and mushy peas and that mint sauce yummy.
o to go back to that time for just 1 weekend I would appreciate more now,it was just the norm then.

Thanx for that Snowman. Memories Eh ?
So many people knew and used him, but I can't find any details about him. Somebody MUST know !
My brother in law moved to Aussie 30 years ago and got me going about the pubs on York Rd. In my rock'n roll days I must have played in most of them, learning about life, girls, beer and other important things .

You say snotty "learning about life, girls, beer and other important things". Nope, I cannot think of any "other important things" and I'm not even sure about "life"!
