Agree it's definitely Briggate, but I think taken from around the junction with Commercial Street or just above.It was the Whitelocks food sign at the top right of the picture that gave it away. Good spot Geordie but remember the zoom will foreshorten the distance.The Whitelocks sign has changed but there is still one there. I seem unable to link Streetview anymore but if you "drop in" on https://goo.gl/maps/m3dHD at about Albion Place/Edward Street and turn south then the 2008 view has a pink ice cream van pretty much adjacent to the Whitelocks sign. I'd say the YEP photo is taken well above Albion Place but we are now arguing over the short distance between Albon Place and the Headrow as to the exact spot.

Thanks for all the research chaps into what is a very deceiving picture. I've walked down Briggate this afternoon and to my amazement noticed for the first time ever that Lower Briggate is indeed slightly "dog legged" from the line of Briggate and, yes, Dyson's clock can be made out.Have also sussed out the bus mystery :-There was a joint timetable for the 30 and 63 routes (Holbeck Moor to Cross Green) and many "short workings" turned in Town and restarted from Vicar Lane - hence the single decker is as I first thought in the middle of Briggate so as to turn right at the Odeon.The number 19 double decker, with passengers on, is en route from Middleton to Roundhay Park so Briggate is definitely the location.

I saw the photo in the YEP that night and thought Briggate.There is so much wrong with the paper I don't report about itanymore.Still buy it just to see if anyone I know has snuffed it but theobits are not used like they used to be,many families don't seem to botherprobably because of the cost involved now.

I wonder how long the YEP will last.....it's thinner than it used to be too. I can't see it having a big circulation anymore...

We referred when working on the Papers, rather irreverently, to BMD's as Hatches, Matches and Despatches. Seriously though, a great deal of care was taken with them and were one of the few items in the paper that were proof-read twice (double checked).
