The Adelphi has a panel detailing the history of the pub in the main corridor which is interesting.I hadn't realised that there was a previous pub on the site which was knocked down to build the present expanded pub as a hotel.

I forgot to mention that as they charge for opening the bar upstairs you will have to go down for drinks so don't spill it on the stairs<LOL>In my younger days i once fell down a flight of stairs at The Black Swan at Peasholme Green in York in full view of the landlord and people from my office(it was an Xmas do).I got up unhurt and hadn't spilt a drop to the amazement of the crowd (and secretly myself).,Landlord asked how on earth I did it,I answered "skill" and sauntered back upstairs to admiring looks<G>.

Well i am in. Can we please have a message from each of those who are attending on the 17th.I count 7 who have committed so far.Including myself there is the Reverand Jones, Dalehelms, Liits,Tilly,Jim and i assume Duncan.I ask this as if there are not that many attending then do we actually need a whole room in a pub at £200?If there are not that many attending then perhaps it would be more prudent to cancel the room and then those who are attending can give something to Steve for the deposit and we could simply meet and take up a few tables in the Adelphi or another similar pub. That is of course dependent on any plans with regards the press etc.

£200 for a large room with no bar does seem quite a lot - usually the hire of a room includes the cost of bar staff doesn't it? At my local club, the room in theory is free and you pay for a couple of bar staff.Anyway, having said that, I hope to be there.

The cost is because it is a Friday night and their large room. They charge more at weekends. The downstairs function room iwhich holds around 15 is already booked by another group that evening.

Thats appreciated Steve but i would say that 7 people isnt enough to warrant a whole room and certainly not at that cost. You could quite easily get that number of people around a couple of tables. If there are no nibbles being ordered and there are less than 15 people then would it not be more prudent to cut our losses, cancel the booking and those that turn up give you something towards the lost deposit? In all likelyhood there may be some people being put off because as the numbers are so low they will feel that a larger percentage contribution towards the room by those individuals is something they cannot afford/wish to pay.If there were 50 people or even 30 people attending then it would be a reasonable amount to pay, but as it stands we will be sat in a corner of a large room around a couple of tables and not getting the bar service either.

well if people want to cancel let me know fast.I said i would pay for it and have done .it is up to people whether they want to give me anything toward the cost . I am not going to chase people for money when they turn up<LOL>.People shouldn't feel though that they have to pay to attend, as the idea is to get Secret Leeds people together for a good night and swap information ,make friends etc. It is also the chance for Duncan to do the relaunch of the site for the press if he wishes.Sitting around a table is good but might be a bit noisy in the main downstairs rooms.

Steve i dont think any reasonable person would expect you to stump up the cash without a contribution from those attending but we have to look at the cost.I would have thought it reasonable for a payment of between 5 and 10 pounds per person for the room but as it stands, despite the thread beginning in June, i can count only 7 people, including Duncan, who have said they are coming and of those 7 some were a while ago.Based on those 7 people we would be looking at £28 per person and thats with no food or bar.I take your point that a noisy pub may be of hinderence to get people together for a good night but we need as many people to attend as possible and if there are even two or three contemplating coming who have not said they will as yet they may well be looking at even 10 people costing £20 per head as being out of their idea of a night out drinking and chatting.I really admire your generosity in saying you would not chase people up for money but i for one would not wish to see you out of pocket. How much deposit have you paid by the way?

No deposit, the full amount. As i said Chris I was happy to pay for the room so your point about people having to stump does not apply. If people want to give me a donation that is fine,if they can't afford it but want to come ,no problem. The whole point is to get people along to meet and enjoy one anothers company which is why I paid for it.

Suggestion.Open a new thread for members to say YES they will attend or NOthey will not.Might give you a bettrr idea of numbers involved.
