As promised, I did a recce of the Adelphi today at lunch time with a friend who knew the place of old. The refurbishment has been very sensitively done. The downstairs area is much the same as before, retaining the separate rooms, but with fresh paint and new carpets. It was quiet when we went in, giving us a chance to chat to the helpful staff. They said that as it is a grade 2 listed building, they had to make sure they retained the original features. The function room had a "closed" sign at the foot of the stairs, but the staff member I was speaking to was only too happy to give us a guided tour. She has worked there for 15 years and obviously loves the place. My friend who knew the room prior to the makeover was really impressed. It is a big room but can be partitioned off if requested. It is light and airy, has two bars and lots of comfortable seats. The place has loads of character. You might have guessed by now that I liked the place and feel that it would be just right for our Big Bash.I didn't mention SL but said that I was interested in using the place for a celebratory event in October. The hire of the Function Room is £10 per hour during the week and £250 for the room at the weekend. I asked if the rate would be cheaper if we only used half of the space, but she said that the room got filled at the weekend and that £250 was the price. I then inquired about availability. The room is booked already for 14th and 15th October but is available on the 16th. These are weekdays and would cost £10 an hour for as long as we needed it. The room is still available on the 17th but would cost £250.I am not a beer buff, but my friend said that the choice of beers was good. She singled out Leeds Pale Ale and Doom Bar. We were also told that they regularly have guest beers on offer. I think the choice should cater for everyone's taste.I also asked about food. They do a comprehensive monthly menu in addition to The Adelphi Burger List and a fixed price menu at £8.50 for two courses and £11 for three courses. They all looked good to me. If I was a smarter person that I am, I would be able to post the menus, but I am me, so you'll have to take my word for it!So there we have it. I hope that I have whetted your appetites.

That is a very generous offer, Steve. Perhaps we need to see how many folk can make it on the 17th and go from there. I feel that the cost should be shared by those participating, but that is only my personal view. If 50 SLers signed up it would be £5 each. That seems a reasonable price for a pleasant private room in a good pub in the centre of the city, My name can head the list if we do go down that route.

Good. So far the bill for you, me and Steve is a mere £83. With luck we will get a few more signatories!
