I live on longroyd grove in beeston (or hunslet depending if ur bothered about where ur from or not) and its only recently ive noticed little things about these streets and around like the old woman next door who has a big metal girder in the cellar roof because her house and every third house was the street air raid shelter so every third or so house had a reinforced cellar roof, and a brick what looks like a ventilation shaft sticking out of the floor next to the rugby/football pitch on other side of bridge opposite tulip retail park, again after speaking to the old woman next door she says there used to be factories on that field when she was a kid so could this be a left over ventilation structure its on the side the road goes under the new bridge. also when i was a kid me and a few mates used to knock about on the field at the bottom of the longroyds where the new bridge is that leads over to hunslet, anyway the big motorway lights at side one of them (on the side of the longroyds) had a manhole cover hatch which one day we lifted and a couple of us climbed down a rusted ladder about 10ft obviously pitch black but wierdly there was a switch on wall that turned on somewhat of a light but could make out it went pretty far off and under the road it seemed like a sewerage system maybe as there was really no reason for it to be there but u could hear flowing water. also after speaking to someone else they sent me a drawing of beeston hill from some time ago and shows u big medieval stones and foundations lining all down the hill and was told the victorians demolished alot of medieval houses and buildings to build alot of beeston including the longroyds/garnets etc so my long drawn out question is does anyone know what was there before the longroyds were built? or does anyone have an old map showing what was there before the longroyds?
