I'm sure some taxi drivers might already consider this, doing their bit to boost the image of the city.

Nothing H&S cnosni, just limited walkway width (I presume vehicular access would continue) 19thC grimness, and the belief that the possible target customer base would prove to be too low having regard to the high cost of provision of this facility. When HS2 is in place there will be ample need for provision of this entrance - but I suspect it will need total rethinking and rebuilding.

If only a tenth of the people who walk up Victoria Road / Neville Street at around 5pm now use the new station entrance it will have been worth it.There must be thousands of them rushing towards the city, a significant number of which seem unable to distinguish between the pavement and the road.

Ok Jim, i think i understand what you are getting at,but from what i can gather the pedestrian access isnt in the dark arches themselves but the access that leads to the entrance will be from outside, the gap between the Hilton and the viaduct on one side and the wharf on the other side.Ill see if i can pull it up out of the plans, though that may well have been an original aspiration.Looking at the HS2 render the entrance looks quite different, though we must remember that the render is just a reresentation, so there will, as you say, have to be plenty of rethinking when this occurs. As for numbers, well, i can only say that when i go to work at rush hour times the number of pedestrians who walk to and from the station area under the dark arches is in fact very very large. There are a large number of offices in Holbeck now, with Tower Works about to be extended as the council releases more land, planning permission for further development on Sweet Street being submitted and of course eventually the HS2 station.Making access to this side of the station wil bring a number of benefits. It will relieve congestion at the main concourse/ticket barriersIt will make it quicker and easier for those people who work on the south side of the station and will probably encourage some of those who currently drive in and park in the Holbeck area to leave their cars at home and use the train. It will probably mean that as the entrance will make an easier commute for thos eworking in the area that prospective devlopers and businesses will see Holbeck Urban Village as a palce where they would wish to start new devlopments/start a business or relocate. This to me is probably the most important as it means taht an area close to teh city centre will se an improvement from what is essentially a place full of derlict warehouses and brown field land surrounding small oasis' of development. This area, which was vital in the industrial revolution to Leeds, deserves better than what it is now.It may also make the owners of Temple Mills pull their finger out.I think IF we dont build it then the area will take longer to improve, possibly even not at all.

Thats your alternative then? Dont build it and wait 20 years before doing anything? I was being sarcastic about the development time for hs2. Like the new market hall and the temporary shed that is about to be refurbished.
