Anyone any idea of which building went on fire this evening? From Armley it appeared to be a substantial block somewhere round Belle Vue Road and south of the old Leeds Grammar School building.

Sounds like it was the old grammar school. There's a report at http://www.westyorksfire.gov.uk/incidents/1730 which says "Building, make pumps 5. Building 80m x 60m. 3 floors 10% involved in fire. 1aerail appliance , 1 hose reel and 4 Breathing appartus. Incident attended by appliances from Leeds, Hunslet, Stanningley & Gipton. Supported by specialist officers in various roles from nearby stations.        LocationOld St Michaels School, St Johns Road, Woodhouse, Leeds. "Hopefully it wasn't too badly damaged.

Thanks for the report mhoulden. Not the grammar shool. That is at the top of the ridge from my view point. The affected building was quite a distance further down the hillside, and is a fairly large modern(ish) "blocky" structure. My A-Z shows St Michaels Catholic College, adjacent to what I think is or was the police vehicle garage/repair facility, and is the likely site.

Bad run recently then Jim. Not long since some recycling place went up by the Canal twixt Kirkstall Rd, Armley Road round near where Comet used to be. That washed a load of toxins into the canal and killed all it touched.
