The big high roof is the section that got burned down. I'd been in it many times. But like most Leeds people I struggle a bit to recall how it looked. It seemed so long ago now.

Somewhere there's a good 1970's? bus shot of the side / exterior of the old lower end market painted green I think. Can't find it.Also, somewhere there's a plan / illustration of the old fish market noting the fountain.

It's all fascinating stuff Phill. Thanks for it. The 1888 map in your post on 18-May-2014 00:05:53 interestingly shows there was a 'Calf & Pig Market' and a 'Hay & Straw Market'. There were also 4 public houses in a very small area to the top left, namely:- Red Lion P.H., Market Tavern P.H., St George's Stores P.H. and London Tavern P.H. (the 1891 map in the post on 15-May-2014 13:24:31 shows there was a Crown P.H. joined onto the Red Lion but it is not fully seen in the 1888 map). There was clearly a demand for drink then! The photo dated 1992 in your post of 18-May-2014 00:10:28 shows just how rubbish my memory of Leeds is! It's only 22 years ago but I have no recollection of the row of white fronted premises on the far side of George Street (?). I wonder when they were knocked down (probably just last week knowing my memory!).

Just looking again at the aerial shot(1992) of the current lay out - it's no wonder, with all those flat roof structures, alcoves and recesses around the buildings;that water pours in when it rains !

I think it was a Birkbeck's cafe, one of two in the markets. Sound right? hi nick, you are right it was birkbecks café up the stairs, my mum once left her purse in there while having a cuppa, and some kind person posted it back to her, if that person is still with us today, god love you and thank you.

I remember the discount furniture store, and there was a shop that sold a bit of everything, including toys and diy type stuff, sort of a forerunner to the pound shops.

Thanks sujay for the photo. The expression "A picture is worth a thousand words" is apt here for me as I now recall the buildings. I see there were parking meters there then! Thanks also Bruno for dating the car "which means the picture can't be any earlier than 1988". I wonder when the buildings were knocked down? I would not be surprised if that was done to provide a 'temporary' car park that has lasted to now with the start of work on the Victoria Gate.
