I've never lived in Armley personally but I've friends who have lived and who still live and own homes there. I think certain parts of Armley are much nicer than others. In streets where there are lots of back to back houses that are owned by landlords / housing associations you get folk that care little about the property or neighbourhood and who've been reluctantly housed there by the local authority. I think its down to personal preference as well, some people might see tightly packed terraces as full of character where as I find them oppressive. Personally I wouldnt choose to live in Armley but I think there are areas of Leeds that are 'worse' for want of a better word. I prefer north west Leeds - Kirkstall, Horsforth, Cookridge, Alwoodley, Meanwood etc.

Quote: There was a program on TV a few months ago and the area you've looked at was featured as a bit of a burglary "hotspot".I assume it was the area near to Armley Park(back entrance) .Lodge Rd? It was near that park yeah, thanks for that info...I may give it a miss based on what you've said!

Conditions in Armley should be better than they were in 1873! In a report dated March 20 1873 in John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' it states "Dr. Ballard, a Commissioner appointed by the Local Government Board to inquire into the sanitary state of Armley, in connection with an outbreak of enteric fever there in July, made his report...His inquiry led him to report that the fever originated in infected milk, supplied by the Hall Lane Dairy, which had become so infected owing to the use of impure water drawn from a well...His report also stated that the unwholesome condition of the outlying township of Armley should early receive the serious consideration of the Leeds Corporation, especially in respect of sewerage and house drainage, and the frequent removal and safe disposal of excrement".
