The Great Fire of Armley....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-le ... 99905Leeds actually made it on to the national news this morning (must be a quiet news day) thanks to this "huge" fire in Armley:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-le ... Apparently there are 80 fire fighters, 15 fire appliances and 2 aerial platforms tackling it - which sounds like pretty much the entire remaining strength of the brigade....Needless to say, the YEP website has no mention of it, but hopefully now it's been posted on here they'll pick it up in a day or three

Good job not at work today - would have to go past the site on the canal towpath. Wonder if it's closed the warehouse as it's right next door?

Seeing photos of the fire on the local TV news this morning it looked like it had been a very severe fire. In a live item at the scene at 8:00 a.m. there was still lots of dark smoke rising and it had already been mentioned that it could be seen a long way away. I looked out from where I am in north Leeds and I could not see any smoke! Oddly, when there was the major tyre blaze some weeks back (at Sherburn?) it was then reported that the high rising black smoke could also be seen from many miles away yet I never saw that either!

Saw it last night when the explosions were going off, about 3 or 4 in the morning it must have been. I thought the explosions were some sort of shenanigans going on out in the back lane. Went out and saw the blaze on the skyline, clearly visible from Kirkstall. Armleygeddon!

A fire that big in Armley could have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

A bigger fire in Armley could provide valuable brown (or black) field developement sites.

My home is in a bit of a dip so TV reception is not that good but I would have thought that I would have seen the smoke from both events but I did not, so thanks for the explanation as to why I did not at least see that from the tyre blaze. The TV images of the Armley event seemed to show it was near to what I think is the old Albion pub, but I think that has been closed for some time.

From my sixth floor flat in Queenswood Drive the sight of the thick black smoke was very dramatic and rose to a huge height while drifting slightly away. It was still visible in large quantities, fresh stuff billowing, until lunchtime and was still going but much less at teatime.
