Mouldings/carvings of dogs (?) on a building on New Station Street and partly on Boar Lane

I took this photo today (April 15 2014) when I happened to spot these dog (?) mouldings/carvings on a building at the junction of Boar Lane and New Station Street (NMS). I don't recall seeing them before despite that they are not particularly hard to see. There are similar dogs on the NMS frontage. I thought I had seen a mention before in SL about the dogs but, if so, I cannot fairly readily find it. The following is however a link to a thread that has much older photos of creatures (? dogs) on a building on NMS, but they are not the same as those in the photo that I took (for one thing they extend much further out in the old photos):- http://www.secretleeds.co.uk/forum/Mess ... eadID=4464

If you zoom in on Google Street View they look more like lions I think. This may be of interest Leo - the building is listed.http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/res ... id=1255921

The building with the dogs/lions is a betting shop of which there are not many in the centre of Leeds! In view of its name it really should be just a short way away and then it could be Will Hill on Mill Hill.

Your suggestion that they could at least be griffins is interesting. I'm more convinced now that they certainly at least do look much more lion-like than dogs. As to the Griffin Hotel, I wonder why it was named that? I've noticed a number of objects on that building that could possibly be eroded griffins, but I've never taken a photo of them (it would need to be zoomed-in).
