Interesting article on the BBC about the meanings of the various different signs and symbols sprayed on to the pavements of British cities by utility providers; gas, electric, etc. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26745534The expert in that article, a chap called John Robinson, is being interviewed by Ian McMillan on his Radio 3 programme The Verb about it this evening:http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03zdbnqI like the term 'Pavement Patois' to describe these arcane sigils Though I wasn't so impressed when some contractors decided to spray these on to my garden gate a couple of years ago - still there to this day!

Are you sure it wasnt one of these secret signs left outside houses by tramps to say whether the householder was either a soft touch or to beware of a vicious dog etc? see:http://www.workhouses.org.uk/vagrants/signs.shtml

No it was definitely Northern Gas Networks! On the upside they did secure a slightly wonky gatepost when I complained about the spray paint, so fair's fair I guess

Regarding the 'DD' this SL thread would seem relevant:- http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... Re: Pavement symbols decrypted
These colourful symbols caught my eye at the junction of Merrion Place and Vicar Lane so I took this photo on December 10 2015.
PS. I hope I am not being thought to be doing too many posts as I do seem to be currently monopolising recent posts.

Totally agree with Tilly and would add that your work is to be praised not just for content but also for the way you accurately time and date your photographic records which I'm sure local historians will value long after we are gone.

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!
