Vending machines- everyday and unusual.

Ta, everybody, that's great. Okay, is this false memory syndrome? Darmon's dairy Royds Lane/Ring Road corner, left side of the door. Woodbines, two cigs and four matches in a specially created striking packet. I even believe they cost a tanner. We smokeked <cough cough> them while overlooking the smelly beck, running dark with tanning chemicals and dyes; overspill from Glovers' upstream.

There used to be vending machines at stations that sold milk. You put a coin in (6d. shows how long it is since) and you opened a drawer at the bottom and there was a carton of milk.The most unusual vending machine I ever saw was at a filling station on the A19 in Whitley Bridge, it sold maggots.There used to be a filling station at Ferrybridge on the A1. You could put a pound note (again it was a long time ago) into a drawer and draw a pound's worth of fuel. Apparently the owner gave up with this device when he discovered that it was dishing out unlimited fuel.I used to smoke, and there was a vending machine at our local newsagents that sold 10 cigs for 2/-. You put in your coin, pulled the drawer and took out your cigs. If you were quick, took out your cigs, closed the drawer and pulled it quickly again you'd get another pack free! Unfortunately I tried this dodge once too often. I closed the drawer before taking out the pack, and it wouldn't open again, so not only did I miss out on the freebie, I also missed out on the pack I'd paid for; Served me right!

Looking at JonLeeds's message, reminding me of raisons in small boxes being available in vending machines, I think they were called Sunshine.

In what I feel sure will not be long before it becomes a cashless society it may not be that many years time when people will look back with some amazement that it used to be possible to get paper money from 'vending machines' (ATMs).

During the war and there were vending machines in the main concourse of Leeds city station. they were very tall and maybe 10 feet round and advertised all sorts of different makes of chocolate including the "Five Boys" bar.the adverts were mouthwatering to me and my brother but sadly we had no money and even more sad was that they were all completely empty due to rationing at that time.

I began this thread to see if the ice-cream monster was a kids' fantasy. My Dad would go to Whingate for a pint of maggots and a gill of casters (whatever that means). Now I learn of a Maggot-O-Mat. That would really tickle him. The tales 0f fishermen.

It's not really the thread to mention this but it seemed appropriate in view of tilly's post. Of the many things that have changed in recent years one that always amazes (and amuses) me is that people just don't seem to mind that their mobile phone conversations can be readily heard. People don't seem at all bothered about others hearing what they say!
