(Click the photo for the full size)Despite the steam locomotive the above photo is from 1988. The scrap yard I mention below was the gates next to the tall hoarding on the far right of the photo. Johnny39 wrote: My recollection of the car over the gate was not on a corner but would be on the straight part of NYS, in the gap between where the advertising hoardings are now. I know it was a long time ago and memories do become a bit confused, well they do in my case, but that's how I recall it in my minds eye. Sorry for any confusion caused on my part. It's all good Johnny no problems It helps dig a load more interesting stuff up when you start looking into things. There was an old small scrap yard on the straight part of the street a few yards further down. I went to it myself to weigh in some old copper piping and back boiler I pulled out in the late 1980's. I'm not sure when that place closed, but I don't think it was the same place as the old photo was taken. The street layout didn't match at all. When going to a scrap yard, always check his scales. They have a tendency to put slivers of scrap metal under them to stop the scales going fully down, and saving them a substantial payout in the process. Make sure to kick them out before loading on the scrap

Just a small point as to round about when the b/w photo was taken. Both films on the bill posts in the pic. were released in 1934. The Hillcrest cinema was one of my old haunts as a kid and the Paramount, of course, became the Odeon, my favourite city centre cinema.

The photo ''without'' the King and Queen in the car was 1935.They appeared later, but I'm not sure what date they took up royal residence, or when that photo was taken

(Click the photo for the full size)I'm pretty sure it was the same comparison location I did early. I'd even go as far as saying it's the exact same rail we see today spanning the gate that carried the car itself. The same roof line is visible on both photos, today partly obscured by trees. The reason we can't see the tall building on the old photo is the difference in camera heights. The google car camera is perched very high up letting us see things not visible when on foot in the same location.

Regarding your post on 27-Mar-2014 16:32:52. I wonder what is the year of the map you show? The area has almost changed beyond recognition since then. The streets with their densely packed houses have gone. There is nothing marked P.H. where the Woodpecker was, though there is a P.H. opposite. The change in the area is amazing. I can just recall the area finally being cleared during the 'slum clearances' (early1960s?).
