I've gone through 14 various books of old Leeds history and found....nothing Until I looked at the last and smallest book I have and found this The book is 'Leeds visible history' by G.A.Rhodes published in 1993.Sadly that's the exact size the photo is printed in the book. But it's great to find because this is only the 2nd photo we have of the actual bar stone. It is better quality than the 1930's photo, and it should clear up Jim's idea that the stone looked too new and the writing was too black. This photo shows the 1930's photo was probably coloured in like I said earlier. The courses of brick match exactly with the 1930's photo. And the info about the bar stones being in place by 1485 is useful too. The Sheepscar beck boundary is unexpected to see, and there is no mention of the Kirkgate East bar stone. I presume the Sheepscar beck bar stone mentioned would be the East bar stone. But in that area it was called Timble beck. Maybe just a slight error on the authors part there I think. As mentioned earlier the book was published in 1993, and all the photos in it are early 1990's. So it was still visible at that time.

Nice find! It's all pointing to it being in the pillar by the Hellenic then isn't it - if it was anywhere else (certainly on the front of the building or the Lady Lane corner) it would be visible in some of the photos of the building in this thread.Just found this on the Leeds Back in the Day Facebook group:No sign of the stone of course, but interesting for the building behind - part of the old workhouse complex?

It's been another one of Leeds temporary car parks for as long as I can remember. If you look on google street view further down from the bus station you can still see bricked up arch remains from the old cellars. Photo from Leodis.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... PLAY=FULLI just found this different view of the Burley bar stone not posted here. It's worth including to get a better perspective where it was.14th September 1927. On left, offices of Liverpool Victoria Insurance Offices then the junction with Albion Street. No 24 George Eastman tobacconist. No 22 Alfred Warwick violin maker. No 20 A Kirk Verity antique dealers, double fronted shop. No 18 J Easby, left window is chocolates with notice declaring fire damage to factory. Right window displays fruit. These shops were estimated to be around 200 years old. Burley Bar was situated here

The best photo I can find after some pretty extensive searching is this one on Leodis from 1980:There's definitely something on the left hand pillar but it's partly hidden by a board. The only way I can think of getting a higher resolution photo would be to order a printed copy and see if that's better. It also looks like there might be something hiding behind the parked car on http://bit.ly/1cArReb (on Flickr) but it's just in the wrong place.

Well these elusive photos took some digging out - But we got there in the end! This 1958 photo shows the old shop buildings before closure and demolition. It's great to finally see the full picture and how it all looked. It was good piecing things together and working out the bus station was built next to the old Crown & Anchor pub. The pub looks to have been split into two shops by this date. The elusive bar stone just visible in the corner pillar. And the bigger bar stone laying photo reveals the secrets we just couldn't see on the other photo. The end corner of the brick pillar finally visible. I think the wood seen next to the corner was just a temporary brickies corner profile whilst laying the bricks. The wooden sheet on the brickies left looks to be an old door with braces on. I think that was probably just a temporary hoarding to keep pedestrians out of the way. I just hope the bar stone hasn't been drilled through when fixing the new shop fronts when the bus station closed.

It still begs the question where was the bar stone in 1906? I can't see any evidence of it where it should be.
