Thanks Uncle Mick - I find these old aerial views fascinating! I never realised that the old Leeds Permanent building on Cookridge Street was built in two phases - looking at the building as a whole nowadays, it looks like one structure. I wonder when the second half was built?

Like Tasa I also find these views fascinating, particularly in seeing what has changed. For some reason when I click on SL images I don't get a larger version but just one that I have to scroll up and down to see. However, using the link in uncle mick's post the bottom photo in that webpage is the same one and on clicking on that a larger and still good quality photo is brought up. Looking towards the top left there is the unmistakeable dome of the Heatons/Pooles building and a little down and left of that is the old Public Dispensary. All of a large area immediately to its right was cleared for the Inner Ring Road (just part of Hartley Hill next to the Dispensary remains). I wonder if anyone knows what the obvious large white building was (it has two dark stripes on top)?I had a at the last part of this information about the photo:-"Despite its industrial base Leeds escaped sustained bombing during World War II; 77 people died and about 200 buildings were destroyed in the nine air raids. As a result many of the buildings in the picture are still standing. Perhaps the most significant change is the redevelopment of Quarry Hill Flats in the 1970s - this was brought about by structural and social problems - not the Luftwaffe".

Thanks uncle mick. The photo is very interesting and sharp. For one thing it shows the 'bend' away of Kirkgate from the New York Street/Call Lane junction that does not seem (at least to me!) that obvious when walking there.

Not sure if its urban myth But I was always told that if that nice Mr A Hitler had set foot on our Sceptred Isle during his European Tour he was going to use Quarry Hill as one of his headquaters as it was so modern complete with its Garchey waste disposal system and heating systemAs he Cut the tour short in France we shall never know

There was no mention of Leeds that I recall but it might be worth your while having a look.
