Does anyone remember the public toilets that were below ground level in Leeds Kirkgate Market, just up by the Vicar Lane / Kirkgate corner of the market? There was also a gents barbers where you could get your hair cut by a Polish guy. Is he still there? I dont know, on the whole if I can help it I'll usually wait until I get home so I avoid using the 'inconveniences' in the city centre. I remember the downstairs Gents and barbers shop just by the market entrance, though I never used either. I did on the odd occasion use the one down the steps at the Corn Exchange.

The Market Toilets are still there, not too bad either.
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Talking of toilets this is one that is no longer there! The 'photo' is a copy of an area near the Corn Exchange in a 1910 map in the Old Maps UK website. I wonder if anything remains underground of the lavatory and drinking fountain? They seem to have been in the middle of a tram circling area! I hope the 'photo' works as I was unsure if it would actually save so that it can be reproduced. I also hope I have not infringed an Old Maps UK copyright. Edit added moments after posting. The 'photo' worked!

I would imagine that they were filled in so that heavy traffic could cross that junction. They filled the City Square ones in and there wasnt even a road going over them!!

Those toilets that were underground in the middle of the road opposite the Corn Exchange are probably now the VIP room at the space nightclub.

If you 'need one' in the corn exchange then browse the bread shop (nice stuff) and others then use them.[Edit] this was insolvent and shut last time I looked

The Gents in the Trinity Centre are very good and free, with plenty hand washing and drying facilities.

Try Harvey Nicks (top floor) or Queens Hotel (entrance from City Square into Queens Bar)
