With regard to your picture of the wartime bus with "synthetic fuel " trailer. In fact the fuel (producer gas) was produced in the trailer by passing air over hot coke, the results being piped to the engine. Apparently the idea was only used for a few years, and involved replacing the coke after about 80 miles. See http://www.countrybus.org/ST/ST.html . In some places (australia) similar units were apparently used for private vehicles also (http://consuleng.com.au/Producer%20Gas% ... 939-45.pdf )

Clearly visible is one of the containers for synthetic fuel, which is pulled along behind the bus like a trailer. Quarry Hill flats visible. Saw something similar in Normandy a couple f weeks ago, only it was a flame throwing Cromwell tank!!!

2 quite amazing photos from jb303.The first shows the view of Quarry Hill,Leeds 1930's. Before Quarry Hill Flats. The curved roof lower left of shot is still there at the bottom of Eastgate/Lady Lane. Now offices, next to the Job Centre I think it was 'the Marquis (?of granby?) pub.Current view from street levelhttp://goo.gl/maps/aDZMNGuessing this was, perhaps taken from the new build 'new headrow'.Second image shows the Leeds Central Bus Station 1937 with the steel frame of Quarry Hill Flats up.Little changed really in 70 yearshttp://binged.it/1d1lZKa

I have wondered how the 'Hill' part of Quarry Hill got its name. I assumed it was a hill at one time and the top photo in Jogon's interesting post above does show its low hill nature. Perhaps it was once a much higher hill.PS. Who is the female in the photo in liits post on 16-Feb-2012 14:13:36?

Just a little extra information for the transport fans and WW2 and Quarry Hill historians. The bus is Bullock and Sons number 146 - a 1933 petrol engined Leyland Titan TD2 with Leyland body. When B & S sold out to West Riding in 1950 the vehicle was one of several already withdrawn for disposal and therefore never ran for West Riding.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I'm glad at least Jogon saw it as otherwise people would be wondering what I was talking about!
