Dedication on the old chapel at what was Eastmoor School in Adel.

There is a redundant (but sealed off) old chapel at what was the Eastmoor Reformatory School, Adel (the famous SL 'abandoned/lost village'!). The site is now being worked on to become a housing estate, but the chapel at least is to be kept (to become a gym I believe). I've seen the chapel (only externally) a few times in recent years but only very recently spotted a dedication on it. The photo (which I took today, October 18 2013) shows the dedication which seems to read "This stone was placed here by Colonel Ingles H.M. Inspector of Reformatory and Industrial Schools Oct' 18th 1881". (note that the 1881 is on the lower foundation stone). I thought I would post this as the dedication may not be well-known, as there does not for example seem to be a mention in SL despite there being very many posts about the school site.

This photo (which I took today, Oct 18 2013) shows where the dedication is, being at the bottom of the projecting part of the chapel facing the road immediately left of the traffic sign. That 'Two Way Traffic' sign has almost certainly been moved, as it should likely be turned round 90 degrees to its left to be readily seen on the road that runs round much of the site.

I thought (hope!) it would be of interest to show this photo that I took today (Oct 18 2013) of the work going on at the site of the school. This area is nearer towards Adel Woods than the old school and is close to Spring Hill lane and cottages. There is a large area by the wood that is boarded-off. The chapel and the school buildings are off to the left.

Passing by the Eastmoor area today (June 25 2014) I had a look to see what progress had been made since my last walk there, so I took this photo (compare it to that I took on October 18 2013). I was surprised to see an 'Adel Beck Secure Children's Home' was well on its way to being built, as I thought the site was only going to be private homes. The home is apparently due to open in November 2014. This is a link to an update (dated December 5 2013) in the 'Secure Children's Homes' website:- http://www.securechildrenshomes.org.uk/ ... c-2013.pdf. Most of the trees are still there! I thought it may be of interest to those who, like me, had not heard of what seems to me to be a very worthwhile 'Secure Children's Homes' project, where in its website it states "There are 17 individually managed Secure Children’s Homes throughout England and Wales encompassing a range of services within a secure environment that support the individual needs of the children in its care. They provide placements for boys and girls aged between 10 and 17 and include full residential care, educational facilities and healthcare provision."

''Adel Beck Secure Children's Home' was well on its way to being built"Well yes a surprise and I suppose it does qualify as a new very secret village By the way, were we not told that the chapel-like building was never used as a place of worship?

Is this the case, and has the new Children's Home been built further east? D'know - it's still a secret

As I understood it Barratts ( parent company of David Wilson) had agreed to buy the site ( including protected buildings) from Leeds City Council but pulled out when the recession began. Funny how they didn't pull out of developing the nice easy-profits site off Church Lane .It was then decided that the Eastmoor high security home/school for young people convicted of serious offences should be updated/redeveloped. That it what is happening now and I think takes in some of the site that Barratts were going to buy. I don't imagine anything will happen with the rest of the site until that is completed. In the meantime, Barratts/ David Wilson continue their campaign to ravage the surrounding of Adel Church......
