EYRIE wrote: Our school chocolate pud came with pink custard and it tasted like ordinary custard. Does anyone remember sausage pie or parsnip chips from school dinners? Urgh! I didn't stay to school for dinner until I started attending Pudsey Tech. I remember that there was a potato shortage and they served roast parsnips instead. There was no kitchen at Pudsey Tech and presumably the meals came from a central kitchen. This must have been the case because I recall one day in particular - freezing cold day - and some bright spark had decided we should have salad - on red hot plates! The pudding always seemed to be some sort of upside down cake. The main course on Fridays was always mince which had the consistency of rubber bands, that's when I became a Catholic for the day!I used to spend part of my dinner money on 5 Senior Service (anyone remember buying cigs in packets of 5?) and so one day a week I had to go hungry!

Majorhoundi, I can remember the pies from Greens, my grandma and grandad who lived on the Ingles used to get them for xmas, I can always remember my dad used to call them 'Stamp' pies for some reason. Very tasty, do you remember Wilf Wade's potted beef?

Hi grumpybloke - I'm talking about 50's & 60's - born in Hunslet and moved to Belle Isle aged 5 as streets were demolished as part of slum clearance. Great time to be a child, freedom, friends and then the good music of the time. Still like Instant Whip though,

Hi Tilly and Skippy - lived in Cross Whitehouse Row (very close to Hunslet Engine Company) then up to Ashbourne Street just off Hillidge Road. went to St Joseph's infant and junior school, learned to swim at Joseph Street Baths and just played out all the time - or so it seemed to me. I don't remember dark nights or winter but I'm sure there were there! Its just that it seemed like summer all the time.

I spent the first 7 years of my life at Belmont Mount & went to Low Road school from 1960 -62. I remember we had to walk up Low Road to another hall for school dinners. Asked for seconds once of Gooseberry Crumble, was sick as a dog, and haven't touched it since.

How about Westlers Hamburgers that were/are in a can? A friend of mine lived on them in the 70's. I think they are a north Yorkshire firm?

Seems they are still going.http://www.westlerfoods.com/Canned-Burgers.htmlI do remember a trend of having rhubarb crumble and custard at school. Pity the 'elf freaks spoiled it by reducing the sugar content. Tart!

I think they are still there, but I don't think they sell canned burgers any more. I had a hot dog from a barrow in New York recently, it tasted exactly like a hot dog from a barrow in Leeds would have done!"
