While I was at Canal Wharf today (September 10 2013) looking towards Victoria Bridge I happened to see the name 'Victoria' on the bridge. I will have looked to that bridge many times from there but I don't recall ever noticing the name before. I have searched SL and also the Leodis website but I could not find a close-up shot of the name. Hoping it may be of interest I have added the close-up photo of the name that I took today.

To show the location of the Victoria name that I posted above this is a view of Victoria Bridge that I took today (Sept 10 2013) from Canal Wharf. The name is on the centre of the bridge.

Oddly enough I only just really noticed the "Victoria" on this bridge yesterday when I was trying to work out the route of Holbeck. It is an area of Leeds I've not visited all that often but I am surprised i have missed it all the same.

It never ceases to surprise me just what I notice where I've never noticed before! On doing a search of Leodis for Victoria Bridge I came across a photo dated 8 October 1908 that shows work going on at part of Hol Beck near the bridge. I found it interesting to read in the photo's caption that Water Lane was built alongside the line of the beck. If you were not aware of the photo this is the Leodis link:- http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL

Thank you, Leodian. I hadn't seen the Leodis picture before. It looks like the street level was much lower then that it is now.

The Leodis picture title describes this site as Cross Oswald Street, which was a fair distance away from Water Lane and the bridge, along Gelderd Road between the cattle market and the railway line to the north-east of the junction with Brown Lane.

I hadn't noticed the title. Is there a thread on here regarding the path of Hol Beck? I have been scratching my head over it for a long while now and can't fathom it out.

Hi Barfly. There is a good deal of info on the Hol Beck in Phill's thread "My Walk Round Victorian Holbeck", though some of the links appear to be no longer available. The Mill Green Goit seen in the Leodis link was a loop off the main beck to provide water to mills off the stretch from Brown Lane to the Water Lane/Holbeck Lane junction.

That's an interesting point about Cross Oswald Street. The map here is an enlargement taken from the 1908 1 to 2,500 map in the excellent Old Maps UK website. It shows Cross Oswald Street as a very small road (just above the L.& N.W.R.) next to the Mill Green Goit and as you say it is a fair distance from Water Lane.I wonder if the urinal is still there just in from the top left corner by the side of Whitehall Road!
