What was radio Luxembourg? Is it still going? I used to collect old transistor and even valve radios and they used to have Luxembourg and other European cities listed on the tuning dials window. As far as I know I've never listened to radio Luxembourg, is it in French?

[quotenick="raveydavey")Growing up I was fascinated by the number 9 bus that (at the time) went all the way around the Ring Road, completing a circuit of our city. As a youngster it seemed like such a long way to go, passing exotic far flung places such as Horsforth and Swillington. So I decided to set out on a voyage of adventure and paid my 15p (maximum fare in those days) and did the 'ring - non stop, full circuit, just to see what it was like. It took blooming ages! .............................................................................................................................................Two hours the round trip raveydavey. When I became a One Man Operator in 1970 the route had not yet become the full circle, but ran from Whitkirk Skyliner to Middleton Bus Garage forecourt via West Park. It was three hours a return trip at that time. My very first duty was on that service on a Saturday and I stood with some trepidation at West Park roundabout waiting for the bus to come at 1234 which it did. One of the very elderly senior drivers got off with a facial expression which indicated "Huh, I don't know what job's coming to - they'll let anything on OMO these days" and disappeared for his break. Despite my anxiety the three hour round trip went without a hitch and I arrived at West Park at 1534 feeling quite chuffed with myself - the same old fella was waiting to take over again and grunted "I 'ope yer filled it up at Middleton." "What do you mean" said I. "Don't yer bother readin' t' running boards ?" said he. Then I looked at the board and I was deflated when I saw in the margin "REFUEL at Middleton Garage at 1321." This was because the buses could not complete the full day's mileage on that route without topping up - I slunk away to Headingley for my meal with "Ah suppose a'll 'ave to it mi' ruddy self" ringing in my ears.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I listened a lot to Radio Luxemburg in the 50's and early 60's.They played all the popular songs of the day.The reception was quite poor as I remember,it would fade away and come back all the time unless you had a good ariel. It really was the only station in those days you got to here the latest music as the BBC didn't have any pop programs that catered for the teenagers musical tastes.Except I think for Top of The Pops, which I think was on the BBC on Sunday evening. They played all the top 20 records. I had bought a Fidelity tape to tape recorder and I wired it up to the radio and recorded this programme ,stopping and starting when Alan Freeman was talking in between each record he played! Totally illegal ofcourse!

Totally illegal ofcourse! tut,tut ! Being a bit younger,I was thrilled to bits when I got my first transistor(tranny) radio in the late 60's....seem to remember the Fidelity brand name.It was about 6" high,4"wide and about 1" in thickness.Very basic effort with just 2 twiddly bits on opposite sides and operated by a single 9v battery that seemed to last for ages. Was the first "proper" present I got along with the "Tuf" shoes with animal paw print marks built into the sole and a compass into the heel(among the internal sock)...i digress.Radio Luxembourg was THE station on an evening and i'd while away many an hour with my head stuck to the pillow with the radio underneath.Yes,the reception was patchy but they played all the latest tunes....after all it was school in the morning and i'd often be awake at 1or 2 in the morning listening to this fantastic piece of gadgetry which incidentally wasn't particuarly cheap for the day, weighing in at around £10 according to form.

Ah, Radio Luxemburg 208. That's a number many of us will always remember, just like our Co-op divi number! I occasionally like to look at YouTube of Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, etc (and my first love Doris Day ). Nostalgic memories. Oh, as to secrets I also did the kicking gas lamps to make them light up. I also used to put bangers in a compartment at the base of what must have been electric lamps (hopefully not gas lamps!) and hearing the very loud bang they made!

We found if you got an old magnet from a big speaker, you could rub it in circles around the cover plate on old electric lamp posts and turn the light on. Must have affected the switch inside somehow. Hours of fun. Cost to public purse? Who knows. Ok i admit it,i did that too!
