The Cowie

Anybody remember the Cowie just off Coal Hill Lane in Rodley?It's been built on a while now but I remember in the summer we used to slide down the steep grass banks on cardboard box's!I presume the Cowie was so named because it had cows on, but I never saw any - any ideas?Graham

The name Cowie rings a distant bell, but I can't quite place it. We used to slide down a hill on t'other side of the by-pass. Nice nickname, BTW.

The cowie is still there, not sure why it is called that. It is just below the coal hill estate and leads into the park. It is a nice walk on a sunny day however its abit hilly

I remember the Cowie.You described it just as I remember it - as if it were my own memories.A narrow path led to the base of it from Coal Hill Lane to the top of the park. The path is still there now but skirts the new houses.I did the cardboard sheet thing in summer when the grass was flattened and parched. This was on my way home from school which was 'Intake Middle' on top of the hill.In winter I would sledge down instead though this would have been on an evening or weekend.There used to be some kind of air-raid shelter on the top of the cowie. hi guys i grew up on half mile lane bang opposite the bridel path leading to the cowie. i spent almost all of my chilhood playing there. It is called the cowie because there was cows there once upon a tine 40/50's if you walk right to the to of the path past the hourse stables you can acsess the Coal hill graveyard. there is loads of really big upright stones there like gate poasts or something and remains of old buildings at the bottom of 1 field. i'ts a wonderfull place i bet it's been there forever!xxx

The thing that hits me is children dont play like we used to do its a shame its all a part of growing up.Its no wonder we have problems with some of the youths today all you seem to here is im feed up i have nothing to do.Most of the things we played with we made ourselves we used to be out for hours.Iknow someone will will say it is not safe for kids to play out but is it as bad as it is made out to be?

IMHO Sundowner, kids have had their imagination stripped from them to early if you ask me. The games consoles these days are stimulating such things as hand - eye co-ordination etc, but imagination is "taken care " of.I resisted the buying of a console for so long with my lad and to hear him play out is fantastic. All these differing scenario's being spouted by him remind me of what I used to do. He has a Wii now and plays on it in the rainy days, but if the weather is fine he's out getting covered in muck, just as I did.As to it being said that it's not as safe nowadays, in fact it's safer than it ever was, just that the media make it out differently. Sensationalism at it's best.

Probably is safer these days but the copensayshun culture has also led to a lot of the kerbs on kids playing. Connkers, yes as long as you wear a hard hat and safety goggles.I read yesterday that the Department for Communities is looking at risk assesments for football kick arounds on the park.My seven year old plays junior football and I referee some of the matches for which I have been CRB checked. At this level there is no requirment for a referees qualification but I did take the introductory one. It did point out that a referrees responsibility includes judging the safety of the playing area but that just reinforced the commonsense that I wouldn't let 7 year olds play football on a surface strewn with broken glass and/or jagged can edges amongst other things. Muds fine though and he certainly doesn't get into trouble for getting dirty.

well i'm only 21 but with a dad that was set on the "you wont learn if you don't" therum. i loved playing out on the cowie. it isnt anymore dangerous 2day than wat it was 20 years ago it's just coverd more in the media thats all. i remrmber being aout 8/9 and finding a really really old coin up there it wasnt even like a real coin really thin and jagged looked like it was roman or something silly like that. i lost it in a game of kurby.
