Does anybody know the meanings behind the many statues and decorations seen on a vast proportion of Leeds? This one is clearly Atlas, but why on this building at the end of Infirmary Street?

This is Atlas Chambers and was constructed in Burmantofts Marmo, a resinated terracotta made to look like Portland stone.Further around the eves of the building are cartouches containing faces of people from different nationalities. Leeds has a wonderful supply of buildings all decorated in Burmantofts pottery. If anyone would like to know more or have any information about the Burmantofts pottery (aka Leeds Fireclay Co aka Wilcocks brickworks) I would love to hear from you all.
