Pumps/plimsoles.

I had not come across the term pumps for a long time so I was surprised today (May 4 2013) to see a window display in an upmarket fashion store in the centre of Leeds of 'Pumps' on sale (special offer of buy one pair then half price for a second pair). They were though in various colours, not the only in black or white 'running shoes' that I recall when I was a kid in ye olde days! I don't know what the price was but as they were clearly a fashion item I would guess they were expensive.

You're right, plims do seem to be making something of a fashionable comeback. Which is ironic really as when we had to wear them for school they were reviled!

Likewise Black "pumps" in your (black) "pump bag" on your "peg".And everything from Rawcliffes on Duncan Street (which I think of as Boar Lane). [edit] ps Leo somewhere you mentioned an opening big enough to stand up in inside 'adel dam' - can't find the thread but have taken a pic which may be route in.

I can remember in the early 50's when pumps/plimsoles began to be replaced by baseball-boots, these offered protection to the ankle but were not as good as pumps for running in.

We had the black slip on ones with elastic in the front.They had a label underneath with the brand name "Jimsoll" A teacher at school kept a size 13 one in his desk draw to wallop folk with!

We also had a teacher like that Lilysmum. It so happened that the slipper cupboard was in his classroom and he delighted in making you pick one from the said cupboard if you had been caught misbehaving. Naturally you picked the smallest size only to be told, "surely you can do better than that, go and try again". This silly game went on until eventually you picked one that he considered to be adequate - usually one that the Jolly Green Giant would have slobbed around in. All great fun for your fellow classmates.

Pumps were great for stopping suddenly. They were so grippy.We made our own pump bags at school with draw-cord and all. I'm sure the teachers did more than we did in terms of making them.Teachers seemed to be rally arts and crafty then.Does anyone remember Maypole dancing at school? Twining or weaving the ribbons in sometimes fairly complex dance patterns. It's only years later it occurs to me the connection with weaving and cloth making possibly.Yeah, pumps had rubber labels stuck on the sole that were a B to pull off.

They were great for sports because they had rubber soles unlike today's resin compounds that don't grip. Many trainers and walking shoes today are ineffective on most terrain because of the cheap compounds that the soles are made from.

Mr. Jowett had a size 13 pump he used for disciplinary reasons - Coldcotes circa 1965.
