Old Maps do call the area Chapeltown and further up a bit was Chapel Allerton. There is also the fire station just down the side that was part of the complex at one time.

I believe Chapeltown or even Chapel Town to be the older name, Chapel Allerton a later variant. Chapeltown Moor, described by Thoresby was located in what we would now call Chapel Allerton. Later Chapeltown Police station was built and in the same era Chapeltown County Primary School (my old school!!) were built in 'Chapel Allerton'. Both of these retained their original names into the era where 'Chapel Allerton'had replaced 'Chapeltown'. The school changed its name to 'Chapel Allerton' in the 1970s , the Police station retained it until the 1990s I believe. And what of what we now call 'Chapeltown'? well this is not such an old place - there were fields and open land between Leeds and Chapel Allerton/Chapeltown until the population explosion of the Industrial Revolution. One of the original developments, around Spencer Place was originally called 'New Leeds' , and you will see this on old maps occasionally , but for some reason the name didnt stick. The new development got lumped in with the rest of Chapeltown - but at a later stage it became useful to distinguish between the two and so gradually, throughout the 20th century the two names became to signify two distinct places - Recent events tending to really crystallise this.A further piece of evidence for all this is Chapeltown Road - which goes right through what we would now call 'Chapeltown' until it gets to...Chapel Allerton!, (or what was Chapeltown) when it becomes Harrogate Road.Hope this all makes sense - I.m going for a lie down...

Re closed police stations - theres something near the Kings Arms in Holbeck if memory serves. Also the old previous Gipton cop shop is still there. There was a combined Police station/ Fire Station (as was Chapeltown) on Marsh Lane until recent developments(i.e about 5/10 years ago)

Drapesy thanks for answering that....There is (in my opinion) a suberb book called "the History of Button Hill" written by Gordon Stowell. It is fictional and follows the development of the area. Opening chapters talk about how it used to look and even describes rhubarb fields where the Mexboroughs stand now, and how the families in the area disapproved of the Savilles and the Mexboroughs being built for the "lower classes" It does mention the Police Station and is a great read (if you can get a copy) anyway I digress from the original thread.

I.ve just remembered Headingley - another Police station/ Fire station combo with a library - this , or part of it at least survives as the 'community centre' opposite the Lounge.Kirkstall was at the bottom of Abbey Road opposite the West End pub /Sports centre. a tiny, derelict part of this survives.
