Leeds news on today's date (August 12) in 1833, 1863 and 1872.

The following are reported in Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire':-August 12 1833. "The Hero, Newcastle, and Leeds coach was overturned opposite Low hall...between Chapeltown and Leeds, by coming in collision with a cart. There were two passengers inside and ten outside; but only three of them were seriously injured...At the time of the accident the coachman...had lost hold of the reins, caused by the pole being snapped in two, and he was jerked off the footboard".August 12 1863. "The Leeds Corporation decided to adopt in the north and north-east district, Dr. Bishop's scheme for deoderising and utilising the contents of ashpits and privies. They also determined to cover in Hol-beck situated in the Holbeck township".August 12 1872. "The Leeds Model Band gained the first prize of £22 10s., and a bombardon, value £18 18s., at the West Hartlepool band contest".A bombardon is "a type of valved bass tuba" according to a dictionary I looked up as I had no idea what a bombardon was! I wonder if it is still around and also if the Leeds Model Band is still going?
